“Bugger all”
13/05/2008 SOUTH Gippsland district has missed out badly in the State Budget.
Dairy cash cows
13/05/2008 DAIRY farmers are riding high with record milk prices and big bucks being paid for dairy cows.
Tabro program failing
13/05/2008 The program supplying Aboriginal workers to Tabro Meats in Lance Creek "is slowly falling apart", according to the program's creator and managing director, Milton James.
Six Aboriginal men from Cape York involved in the work placement scheme left the abattoir just after Easter, with just 10 left.
The company is advertising in local media for more staff.
Mr James said the Federal Government had changed the focus of the program since intervention began in the Northern Territory, and was now using it for welfare reform rather than to put suitable people in jobs.
"I need to get the attention of (Prime Minister Kevin) Rudd or (Indigenous Affairs Minister Jenny) Macklin but I am having no luck," he said.
"In the meantime the scheme is slowly falling apart. Tabro Meats in Lance Creek had 23 participants last year, it's now down to 10. Cobram abattoir has none."
"Canberra made repeated promises to me that they would get back with some questions but I have heard nothing. I contacted Jenny Macklin's office to ask for a meeting but haven't heard from them either."
The workforce at Tabro is made up of Brazilian, African, Thai and Aboriginal workers. Some of the workers are on 457 work visas.
Assistant manager Brian Vickterson said the departure of the men was very unfortunate.
"The men who left were among some of the newer arrivals," he said.
Mr Vickterson confirmed that "quite a few" of those involved in the work placement scheme had left during the program's association with the abattoir.
"They can't hack being away from home, which is why it is understood that if they walk away it's their choice," he said.
Mr Vickterson said the indigenous workers were paid as much as anyone else on a trainee wage, and Tabro Meats did not receive any special subsidies from government for its participation in the program.
"We treat them the same as anyone else. They're good employees and they're paid on the full training allowance. Whether they are from Cape York or locals, the subsidy from the government is no different," he said.
Bass Coast Shire Council mayor Neville Goodwin said the council was totally supportive of Tabro Meats.
"We're doing what we can to help. They (those involved in the work placement scheme) are a credit to themselves and a credit to Tabro Meats."
Mr James said it was "strange how our Prime Minister talks a lot about the need for new ideas, with the 20-20 summit and all that.
Kosky says get on board
13/05/2008 The State Government has promised "premium road coach services" to replace the train that seems unlikely to ever return.
Premium road coach services are those with toilets.
Public Transport Minister Lynne Kosky said the will of the people had been met.
"This is what people in the region have been saying will bring the most benefit, providing crucial access to employment, health and social opportunities," she said.
The devil may be in the detail though, of which local operators know little.
Gippsland Bus Services' Nicki Holtham said she knew nothing of the government's plans, but conceded her company's services could be given a boost with the cash
injection.
"As to what it is, I have no idea," she said.
"I only know about the announcement from a third party who saw something on TV, so I really can't comment."
A spokeswoman from Dysons Bus Service said it had been ordered by the State Government not comment about the budget.
"We've been told to refer all enquiries to the Department of Transport," she said.
Spokesperson for the South Gippsland Public Transport Users Group, Max Semken said that there were "that many holes in government's statement that I can't really make a comment.
"I looked through the statement and there was hole after hole," he said.
"If the bus company proprietors don't know what the government is going to offer, how could I?
"I can tell you one thing, though. The fight will continue."
But Nationals leader Peter Ryan said the budget had failed the people of the region.
"Almost a decade has passed since Labor went to the 1999 election with a significant promise to restore passenger rail services on four lines across Victoria," said Mr Ryan.
